National Volunteer Caregiving Network

Event Description: 

Join us to learn about volunteer caregiving programs that help promote the health, well-being and independence of older adults and people with disabilities. Over 650 programs are located throughout the United States, including the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico. Whether it’s a ride to the doctor, picking up groceries/pharmaceuticals, paperwork, or changing a lightbulb, older adults and people with disabilities benefit from a volunteer who lends a helping hand.

MLTSS for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Strategies for Success

Over the past five years, there has been explosive growth in the number of states implementing comprehensive Medicaid managed long-term services and supports (MLTSS) programs; however, most have excluded LTSS services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Serving people with I/DD requires unique approaches to program development, implementation, and management.

Speakers from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), HHS Office of the Inspector General (HHS-OIG), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, HHS’ Office on Civil Rights (HHS-OCR) and Administration for Community Living will present findings and model practices that were published in early 2018 in the joint OIG-ACL-OCR report entitled, “Ensuring Beneficiary Health & Safety in Group Homes” as well as GAO’s recent inquiry entitled, “Improved Federal Oversight of Beneficiary Health & Welfare is Needed.” Recommendations/actions implemented by CMS as a result of these inquiries

Independent Practice Associations: What are they? How do they work? And will they benefit me?

When working with integrated care systems, Community Based Organizations (CBOs) may find it beneficial to work collaboratively with other CBOs in a way that allows them to build on one another’s strengths and better position them to meet the needs of integrated care payers. There are a variety of ways to structure this type of collaboration, including Independent Practice Associations (IPAs).

Managed long term services and supports (MLTSS) for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) provides opportunities to increase home and community based services (HCBS), promote employment and community integration and increase quality and efficiency. All of which could improve the lives of people with I/DD. However, the use of MLTSS programs for people with I/DD is still relatively new.
