National Core Indicators - Aging and Disability Adult Consumer Survey (NCI-AD) 2022-2023 National Report

ADvancing States, Human Services Research Institute, and participating states are thrilled to announce the release of the National Core Indicators - Aging and Disability Adult Consumer Survey (NCI-AD) 2022-2023 National Report!

NCI-AD is the most comprehensive source of information about the characteristics and outcomes of older adults and people with disabilities using long-term services and supports.

In 2022-2023, we heard from over 15,000 people from 18 states across the US about their services and their quality of life. Among these people, 37% were between the ages of 18-64, while the other 62% were 65 and older. The sample represents a diverse group of older adults and people with disabilities, with respect to race and ethnicity, as well as programs (Medicaid and Older Americans Act enrollees) and residence type (.e.g, nursing home and assisted living, senior living, own home/apartment). In addition, the 2022-2023 survey has a brand-new module focused on outcomes for people who use self-directed supports.

These data suggest that there are overall positive outcomes in areas such as staffing and person-centered planning, but there is significant variation across states, settings, and personal factors in terms of access to services, healthcare utilization, and community participation and belonging. The findings can be used to improve equity in access to and quality of services for older adults and people with disabilities.
