Liberation to Leadership: The Role of CILs in Transforming Communities

The National Council for Independent Living is hosting Liberation to Leadership: The Role of CILs in Transforming Communities, a brand new national onsite training. The event will be held in Berkeley, California September 15-17, 2015. The cost for the event is $150 but it includes a tour of the Ed Roberts Campus at the University of California at Berkeley. Registration closes on August 25,2015.

Long Term Care And Caregiving - The Prevalent Social Issues Facing All Generations

Every generation can learn from those that came before and those that follow. In this spirit we launched a generational planning study to help share wisdom across the generations. In the third and final part of this three-part series, we will focus on the importance of planning for a long-term-care event. Currently only a third of adults plan on taking responsibility for their care as they age.

Disability, Food Insecurity, and SNAP: Addressing the Needs of Americans with Disabilities

The Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) is hosting a webinar to address the needs of Americans with disabilities that face food insecurity. A distinguished panel of experts will speak about the current status of food insecurity among this populations, the role of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for people with disabilities, and offer recommendations for strengthening SNAP benefits.The release of the new FRAC Report, SNAP Matters for People with Disabilities will accompany this webinar. There will be closed-captioning on the webinar for the hearing impaired.

Changing Nature of Family Caregiving Webinar

The Disability and Aging Collaborative is hosting a webinar on the findings from three recent studies on family caregiving. A recent study done by the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP shows an update on the profile of family caregivers in the U.S. A study by the Community Living Policy Center provides the patterns of family caregiving over the past ten years and a study by the Easter Seals, with support from MassMutual Financial Group highlights Millennial and Generation X caregivers and individuals who have not had to assume this position.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Since 1992, the annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
