The National Council on Aging (NCOA) is hosting a webinar to discuss findings and promising practices that can help eligible seniors maintain coverage as they switch from Medicaid expansion to Medicare. 32 states and the District of Columbia have expanded their Medicaid programs. This has extended Medicaid coverage to low-income adults aged 19-64 with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level, and this is called the “Adult Group”. However, this population is not permitted to have both Medicaid and Medicare.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and private sector organizations are sponsoring the National Research Summit on Care, Services, and Supports for Persons with Dementia and Their Caregivers. This is a two day meeting open to the public. In-person registration is now full, but if you would like to participate in this meeting, you are encouraged to register for the videocast option.

Medical debt is one of the most prevalent types of consumer debt. For both elder and non-elder consumers, 20% have at least one medical debt collection item in their credit reports. Additionally, elders are more likely than younger consumers to file for bankruptcy due to medical expenses. This webinar, hosted by the National Center on Law and Elder Rights (NCLER), will discuss the issues facing older consumers and offer strategies to address the challenges. The presentation will also highlight health care and medical debt protections which may be available to older consumers.

The Social Security Administration is hosting another WISE webinar to talk about Social Security programs and Work Incentives available to people who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. Participants will learn about:

• How to identify the type of disability benefit you receive by going online;
• Work Incentives that are available to you if you receive SSDI benefits; and
• Social Security's Ticket to Work program.

This webinar from the National Center on Law and Elder Rights (NCLER) is a follow-up to September’s Medicaid 101 webinar. This webinar will provide an overview of LTSS, and will include both home and community-based services and institutional care. Participants will learn about care provided at home, at a day center, in an assisted living facility, or in a nursing facility. In many cases, LTSS is funded through Medicaid, and the financing and quality of LTSS often depend upon Medicaid laws and policies.

State vocational rehabilitation (VR) agencies are the main source of job services for people with disabilities, and VR agencies have the potential to help people receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) become more independent and economically successful. SSDI beneficiaries who receive VR services often see their earnings increase, however only a small amount earn enough to leave the disability rolls.

The National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) and the National Council on Aging (NCOA) is hosting a webinar series during the week of October 16. This series will highlight recent advances in research, support, and long term services for people aging with disabilities. Individuals “aging with disability” represent a growing population with unique healthcare needs.

Americans are Living Longer and in Greater Numbers

The population of older Americans is growing and living longer than ever. As a group, they are living active lives and contributing to the economy. The added years to the lifespans have resulted in a longer middle age—extending the period when workers are at their most productive and creative.

This webinar will discuss the new tools for older adults and their caregivers that are available on the recently revise toothwisdom.org. They will also present on how to create consumer-friendly resources for an older adult population. Toothwisdom.org is a project of Oral Health America that serves older adults and caregivers by providing information about oral health in aging and connecting individuals with affordable dental clinics.
