The National Alzheimer's and Dementia Resource Center is holding a Technical Assistance (TA) webinar. This will provide information about prevalence and characteristics of people wiht dementia who live alone, signs of self-neglect and intervention strategies, and the experiences of people with dementia who live alone.
Speaker Information:
-Phyllis “Penny” Braudy Harris, Ph.D, ACSW, LISW is Professor and Chair of the Sociology & Criminology Department and Director of the Aging Studies at John Carroll University. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, and is the founding co-editor of Dementia: The International Journal of Social Research and Practice. She has received the 2008 Gerontological Educator of the year for the state of Ohio, the 2008 Ohio Magazine Excellence in Education Award, and the John Carroll University 2009 Distinguished Faculty Award. Her research focuses on understanding the psychosocial impact of a dementing illness on persons living with early stage dementia, and their family members particularly people who are often isolated and in understudied groups, such as people living alone and people with young onset dementia. She has 25 years of experience related to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. She has published 2 books, written over 60 book chapters and articles in leading gerontology journals, and presents nationally and internationally on dementia care. She also sits on the Boards of a number of nonprofit organizations in the Cleveland area.
-Michael Lepore, Ph.D. is a Senior Health Policy & Health Services Researcher with RTI International, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Health Services, Policy, & Practice at Brown University. Prior to completing his PhD, Michael worked in the dementia care unit of an assisted living facility; this experience has motivated his contributions to long-term care research. His research career has focused on issues concerning residential long-term care, including personal care homes, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes, and has centrally attended to questions of quality and equity. Michael’s recent publications examine the influence of Medicare and Medicaid payment rates on nursing home approaches to culture change. In addition to his contributions to research, Dr. Lepore has collaborated on quality improvement and culture change efforts with long-term care organizations in the United States, Canada, and The Netherlands. Currently Michael is involved in several long-term care research projects, including the development of new measures of nursing home quality for use in CMS’s 5-Star rating program, the development of theoretical and operational frameworks for person-directed nursing home care, the examination of safety and quality in unlicensed personal care homes, and the development of a report examining services for individuals living alone with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.
