Supporting LGBT Adults Living with Dementia

Event Description: 

This webinar will discuss how organizations can better design services to support LGBT individuals with dementia. Participants will learn about dementia risk factors for LGBT older adults, best practices for LGBT dementia care, and LGBT dementia resources. This webinar will also discuss the work of the San Francisco LGBT Dementia Care Project, an innovative project with the goal of increasing access to dementia-capable care for the LGBT community.

Presenters:

Arthur Chan is a LGBTQ Project Manager and Family Care Specialist at the Alzheimer’s Association. He provides care consultation and professional training, and conducts outreach activities to the Asian Pacific Islander and LGBTQ communities to raise public awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Before joining the Association, Arthur worked as a clinical psychologist in the field of neurocognitive disorders in Hong Kong for four years.

 

Charles Symes is a leader in the home care field.He started his own business in 1993 after his initial profession as a Medical Laboratory Tech. Upon entering the home care field, Mr. Symes worked under the compliance standards of a Medicare Certified Home Health Agency until finding his niche as a Home Care Organization providing high quality in-home care personal services.His company now serves 13 counties in Northern California and employs over 450 part time and full time caregivers.Mr. Symes was the Artistic Director of the Silicon Valley Gay Men’s Chorus for over 10 years and has networked and volunteered with many San Francisco-based LGTB Partnerships and Aging services.Mr. Symes employees are proficient in LGTB aging and dementia services and is an active learner for new and evolving methods in the long term care and supportive services industry.
