The National Council on Independent Living's (NCIL) CIL-NET is sponsoring a webinar on an introduction to the new indirect cost rate requirements for Centers for Independent Living(CIL). This past July, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHS) notified all Centers for Independent Living receiving federal funds that they would need to submit an indirect cost rate proposal instead of the cost allocation plans required by the US Department of Education. This webinar will teach CILs about the new requirements set by DHS.

Promising Practices in Senior SNAP Enrollment

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) is sponsoring a webinar on promising practices in Senior Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Enrollment. "Only 41% of low-income older adults who qualify for SNAP are enrolled in the food benefit." The National Association of State Head Injury Administrators (NASHIA) in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Injury Center are hosting a webinar on fall-related traumatic brain injuries (TBI) among older adults. The featured speaker will be Grant Baldwin, PhD, MPH, Director of the Division of Unintentional Injuries, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The webinar will provide information on the Injury Center’s efforts to reduce falls among older adults and States’ efforts to identify TBI within in the older adult population.

The University of Rochester Medical Center is hosting a webinar on early recognition of cognitive and functional decline. Dr. Lucille Esralew, PhD, Trinitas Regional Medical Center will present an overview of the literature on early detection of the changes associated with dementia among persons with I/DD. Participants will have an opportunity to review the National Task Group’s Early Detection Screen for Dementia (NTG-EDSD) which is an administrative tool used by professionals and family caregivers as an aid to shared dissemination with health care professionals.

State Trends in the Child SSI Program: The Growing Role of SSI in the Safety Net

Mathematica Center for Studying Disability Policy is hosting a webinar on State Trends in the Child Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Program: The Growing Role of SSI in the Safety Net. There has been a dramatic increase of children receiving SSI benefits over the past 15 years, a net increase of 45 percent. There is no policy or program change that explains this dramatic increase. Mathematica completed a new study for the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation that examines this increase and some of the reasons for it.

National Memory Screening Week

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) is sponsoring the National Memory Screening Week (NMSW) which will be held from November 1st - November 7th this year. Last year when it was merely one day long, the AFA screened over 250,000 people. A recent study shows that screenings may detect cognitive impairment up to 18 years prior to clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's or dementia. This increased awareness brings a demand for memory screenings now more than ever.
