Meeting the Unique Needs of LGBTQ+ Older Adults in Illinois

Paula Basta, M.Div., Director, Illinois Department on Aging and ADvancing States Member, wrote a guest blog post for ACL about the unique challenges of LGBTQ+ older adults. The blog post highlights the specific struggles this population is facing in Illinios regarding descrimination, representation in aging services, chronic and mental health, and securing access to care, as well as touches on some inititiaves that are being developed to address these issues.

Celebrating and Supporting LGBTQ+ People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

The Integrated Care Resource Center released a brief that offers tips for engaging providers in integrated care programs for Medicare-Medicaid enrollees. Integrated care programs are successful when a broad spectrum of providers are engaged in the process. This brief provides states with tips on how to engage physicians, hospitals, nursing facilities, and community-based service providers that serve Medicare and Medicaid enrollees.

The BJBC quarterly newsletter contains two stories on building a stronger workforce. “Capturing the Training Needs of Direct Care Workers” describes preliminary findings from a study in which direct-care workers and supervisors are surveyed about how effective their training has been and what else they need to provide quality care. “Matching Direct Care Workers with the Families Who Need Them” describes the searchable web-based registries in several states that bring people together.
