Developing Rural Information and Assistance Programs

Older people living in rural areas face unique challenges, not only in accessing benefits and services, but also in gathering information about programs that can help them. This brief tackles the issue of information and assistance (I&A) in rural areas by profiling an area agency on aging that has successfully established an I&A program designed to meet the needs of rural elders. We offer tips from the agency’s experience and insight from experts in the field.

Promising Practices in Illinois – Homeownership Coalition for People with Disabilities and Community Service Options, Inc. Home Options

The Homeownership Coalition for People with Disabilities in Springfield, IL and Home Options, a program through Community Service Options in Chicago, receive funding from a Real Choice Grant to enhance services to people with disabilities. Each program coordinates services and funding including: pre-and post-purchase counseling, home buyer education, down payment & closing cost assistance, home modification funding, home maintenance classes, early delinquency intervention, and in-home services.

Participant Experience Survey, Brain Injury version (PES BI)

The target population for this instrument is adults with acquired brain injuries. It was developed with assistance from brain injury waiver staff in several states and combining elements of the original PES E/D & MRDD tools. The four domains include: program supports; choice and control; respect and dignity; and community activities. Two additional sets of questions, covering community integration in greater depth and ADL/IADL unmet needs, are included for waiver programs where applicable.

Ticket to Work: Inside Ticket Summer 2005 Newsletter

The Elimination of Barriers Initiative Website

This is the official website for the Elimination of Barriers Initiative (EBI)-an eight State demonstration project designed to support and evaluate efforts to address the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illnesses. The EBI uses public education, contact, and reward methods to achieve this goal. The website also features public service announcements, brochures, toolkits, resources for addressing stigma in school and workplace settings and information in Spanish.
