Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities

The innovative site is an important component of the ADRC Technical Assistance Exchange, housed at The Lewin Group. ADRCs are designed to overcome barriers to community living for people with disabilities of all ages by streamlining access to long-term support services through \"one-stop\" resource centers. Twenty-three states and one territory have received grants to develop ADRCs. Also included here is a presentation of the major TA activities support for the ADRC grantees.

This document highlights North Dakota’s plan to pay family caregivers for services. North Dakota, as part of its efforts to increase alternatives to nursing homes, uses state funds to provide monthly payments to spouses and other family members to care for low-income people with disabilities, including older people living at home. The report provides background, implementation, and impact information for the program.

Communities of Power is a source of information about issues of importance in Michigan's Disability Community and maintained by the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition (MDRC). MDRC works to build opportunities for people with disabilities so they may live fully integrated lives within their chosen communities, now and in the future. Full citizenship is the expected role that people with disabilities will play, and their hopes and dreams parallel those of citizens without disabilities.

Final report of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health (issued July 22, 2003). The Commission is part of the \"President's New Freedom Initiative\" to eliminate inequalities for Americans with disabilities. The report outlines goals for mental health and recommendations for achieving them.

This report details the State of Wisconsin’s Aging and Disability Resource Centers that offer information to the general public about a wide range of community supports available to older persons and persons with disabilities. The Resource Centers also give in-depth advice about long-term support options and provide a single entry point for persons seeking access to the state’s home and community based services programs.

Workers are affected by chronic conditions in two critical ways — by their own conditions and by the need to care for family members with chronic conditions. Better health technology and disease management programs, as well as flexible work policies, are helping many people affected by chronic conditions function in the workplace. Changes in the workplace need not be expensive, and policies and programs that address the needs of workers are beneficial to employees and employers alike.

This document announces a unique opportunity for New Hampshire communities to improve the quality of life for all of its citizens. This opportunity will allow communities to explore ways to use the social capital within its borders to better provide support and services to all its residents including those who are aging or others with disabilities. The document describes the grant and gives specific application details.

Report describes how one Chicago neighborhood identified isolated and uninvolved local residents and introduced them to community groups based on their talents and gifts. The residents shared their talents, became active, & added new strength to the community\\'s life. The particular activity described involves people who are isolated and nonparticipating because of the label \\\"developmentally disabled.\\\" However, the methods described apply to people isolated because of other conditions as well.

This paper analyzes and answers the critical question: Does the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) apply to commercial and other private sector Web sites, and if so, what does it require. Much discussion of this question seems to be conducted without careful attention to the case law and other authorities that have already built-up around this question.

Groton is a community committed to inclusion as evident in the opportunities that exist for residents with disabilities. The goal of this proposal is to make community activities more accessible and to change attitudes of the public.
