National Adult Protective Services Training Center Online Courses

NATC, funded by ACL and administered by the National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA), provides self-paced eLearning courses for APS professionals throughout the United States. While designed to support APS professionals, NATC is also available to allied professionals interested in learning more about adult maltreatment and APS. NATC has 24 free online courses on topics relating to APS, as well as hundreds of resources providing additional knowledge across the various topics. The eLearning courses are free and can be completed at your own pace. Some topics include: An overview of Adult Protective services; Power and control dynamics; Trauma-informed practices; The aging process and neuro-cognitive disorders.

Video and Messaging Tools about DIAL

The Housing and Services Resource Center (HSRC) has released a new video about DIAL-- the Disability Information Access Line. The Disability Information and Access Line (DIAL) can help people with disabilities to find vaccine locations, make appointments and arrange for transportation. Trained staff at DIAL can also help people with disabilities track down community supports to help with independent living, such as services that help with health care benefits, financial assistance, housing, food and more. This informational video gives an overview of DIAL for professionals in the housing, health, and other sectors, especially ones working with people with disabilities.

Supporting Black Caregivers and Older Adults

To celebrate Black History Month and National Caregivers Day, NCLER interviewed Dr. Donna Benton of the University of Southern California’s Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. During the interview, Dr. Benton discussed her work supporting Black caregivers, the importance of caregiving in the Black community, and strategies for advocates to support their Black older adult clients. She also spoke about the need for legal assistance in advance planning and addressing housing scams in the Black community.

Nursing Home Neglect: Preventing it and Getting Help

The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care has shared a podcast episode and fact sheet identifying abuse and neglect toward older adults in nursing home settings. Dr. Laura Mosqueda, a professor of Family Medicine and Geriatrics at the University of Southern California, defines neglect as the failure to provide necessary goods and services to a resident to avoid physical harm, pain, mental anguish, or emotional distress. This can include a lack of staff, supplies, services, or training that fail to meet residents' needs.

Culture and Person-Centered Practices Video Series

Acknowledging and understanding an individual's racial and cultural identities is essential for providing person-centered supports with cultural competence. There are limited resources that directly address the intersection of culture, language, and identity with person-centered practice. The NCAPPS community has published a series of short videos that narrate how personcenteredness relates to race and culture. More videos will be released over the next several month.

The Positive Impact of Robotic Companion Pets

A panel of State Units on Aging senior leadership discuss their use, and the impact of, Joy for All robotic Companion Pets. They share the intended use cases, distribution methods, volume of pets distributed (if appropriate), and specific stories of impact. Leaders also speak to their plans regarding the ongoing use of Companion Pets to combat social isolation and loneliness post-pandemic.
