Tips for Working with Refugees with Disabilities & Connecting Them to Community Resources

These are two presentations created and facilitated by the Community Connections for Refugees with Disabilities program sponsored by Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital in Chicago, IL. One offers ideas and things to consider when connecting people to community resources; the other focuses on things to remember when working with members of particular cultures. Although both presentations were made with an Illinois audience in mind, people from other states will find helpful information here as well.

Confronting Multiple Oppressions: Examining the Needs of People with Disabilities who are of Hispanic / Latino Descent

Hispanic individuals with disabilities have unique needs that service systems often do not meet. Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital recently conducted a needs assessment with our Hispanic patients with disabilities, striving to understand the general disability-related needs of Hispanic patients and how medical systems can fit into meeting these needs. These PowerPoint presentations were presented at the Latino Social Workers Organization's conference in March 2009 (Chicago, IL).

Financial Management Services (FMS) Conference - 2009

This biennial workshop was held in Baltimore, November 16 & 17. The conference offered two workshop tracks: a Strategic Track dedicated to big picture FMS issues facing state and program administrators and a Tactical Track dedicated to technical and operational issues. The IRS unveiled updated guidance specifically for participant direction Fiscal/Employer Agents and will even offered an informal, face-to-face question and answer booth. Review the presentations for further guidance.

Work Incentives Network (WIN) Presentation - Oregon

One of the biggest challenges for low-income adults with disabilities who want to work is how to keep health benefits after obtaining employment. WIN is a free service designed to help people with disabilities understand and use employment programs in Oregon and/or federal work incentives programs to obtain, maintain or advance in employment while still meeting critical needs. For this investment, Oregon gets increased tax revenue and decreased reliance on state and federal funded services.

Readiness Reviews for Veteran Directed Home and Community-Based Services Programs

The purpose of the review is to determine whether essential participant-directed program components are in place and to identify areas where assistance may still be needed. Review a presentation and audio archive to understand expectations. Also included is a consumer experience flowchart which describes the criteria sites must meet in order to be approved to deliver VDHCBS.
