Responding to Community Health Needs within the Framework of the Affordable Care Act (ACA): A One-Day Symposium

The ACA creates a new framework to address community health needs as an integral component of the success of overall health reform. This symposium was designed to address current broad-based attempts to advance healthy communities and healthy living, which are less recognized contributions of the ACA than activities such as coverage expansion, health insurance regulation and reform, and changes in medical practice and payment. Workplace Personal Assistance Services (PAS) for People with Disabilities: Making Productive Employment Possible.

This study explores the perceived value of workplace accommodations from the perspective of the individual users of PAS who had contacted the Job Accommodation Network (JAN). A follow-up survey assessed their perspective on the impact of PAS and other accommodations. The findings indicate that people who have considered or implemented PAS accommodations perception of work ability increases from being "Substantially Limited" with no accommodation to "Not Limited at All" with accommodiation.

The Impact of the 2007–09 Recession on Workers with Disabilities

Disability measures recently introduced into the U.S. Current Population Survey offer an unprecedented opportunity to track, month by month, the labor force status of working-age adults with disabilities in the midst of a major economic downturn. Over a one-year period, the number of employed workers with disabilities declined at a rate more than three times that of workers without disabilities, and the unemployment rate rose dramatically to levels far exceeding that of other workers.

A study of the severe housing affordability problems of people with disabilities. The study compares the federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments of people with significant and long-term disabilities to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Fair Market Rents for modestly priced rental units. Crossing New Frontiers: Benefits Access among Isolated Seniors

One in six seniors living alone faces physical, cultural or geographical barriers that prevent them from receiving benefits & services that can improve their economic security, and ability to live healthy, independent lives. This brief describes the ways in which social and geographical isolation pose barriers to benefits access among older adults. By examining the main characteristics of the isolated, this paper identifies new opportunities to improve and expand outreach and enrollment efforts.

Effects on Beneficiary Employment and Earnings of a Graduated $1-for-$2 Benefit Offset for Social Security Disability Insurance

This study evaluated impacts on employment and earnings levels among people with disabilities of eliminating the cash cliff aspect of Social Security Disability Insurance, in which beneficiaries lose their entire cash benefit when their earnings become too high. Findings demonstrated that an SSDI offset can have a significant effect on the SGA earnings rate of beneficiaries, but that the effect may be limited to a subset of individuals, and may be enhanced when paired with healthcare protection.
