Online Graduate Certificate Program Leadership for an Aging Society

Virginia Tech’s Center for Gerontology is offering an Online Graduate Certificate in Leadership for an Aging Society. The 12-credit program can be completed in one academic year and covers a wide variety of topics such as the biological, psychological, and sociological impacts of aging, ethical issues surrounding older adults and their families, as well as the public policy development and approval processes at the local, state, and national levels. Certificate recipients will be prepared by industry leaders to lead and manage teams and multi-agency collaborations that serve older adults in a variety of settings, including private and public organizations.

Call for Applications: Medicaid Pathways Program, Class of 2023

CHCS has announced a nine-month leadership development program designed to support a cohort of senior Medicaid leaders in developing skills to lead a complex organization like Medicaid, as well as improve outcomes for enrollees by enhancing state capacity. The Medicaid Pathways aims to help Medicaid leaders who are new to their leadership role and/or are interested in advancing to a more senior role in the future, especially individuals with diverse backgrounds, including people of color, people with disabilities, and individuals with personal experience with Medicaid or another publicly financed program.

Changing Talk: Online Training (CHATO) to Reduce Behavioral Symptoms

The University of Kansas is seeking nursing homes to participate in an NIH-funded study testing an online version of the evidence-based Changing Talk (CHAT) communication training program. The CHAT program uses a person-centered approach to educate direct-care staff on better communication strategies with residents with dementia, which can reduce resistiveness to care and behavioral symptoms. This free online training can qualify for CMS dementia care training hour requirements.

National Consumer Protection Week is a time to education people on their consumer rights and how to avoid fraud. NCLER resources include trainings, brochures, and flyers that share information about preventing and protecting older adults from scams and abuse.

Seeking Participants for Research Study: Changing Talk Online Training (CHATO)

The University of Kansas School of Nursing is seeking nursing homes to participate in an NIH-funded research study testing a new online version of the evidence-based Changing Talk (CHAT) communication training program. CHAT educates staff about reducing elderspeak (infantilizing communication) and results in reduced behavioral symptoms and need for psychotropic medication for residents with dementia. The new online version (Changing Talk: Online Training (CHATO)) consists of 3, one-hour interactive online modules that provide flexible and accessible access for staff.

Mindfulness Training for Healthcare Professionals

The National Paralysis Resource Center has announced a virtual three-part series to train healthcare professionals who serve wheelchair users on mindfulness and yoga techniques to encourage wellness throughout the body and mind. The program is free to qualified healthcare professionals that directly serve people with paralysis as part of their job responsibilities. The series will be led by Jay Gupta, RPh, MS, MTM Specialist, in March and in April. Each interactive session in March will be held live through Zoom on Saturday from 10:00 a.m to 5:30 p.m. ET. and sessions in April will be held on Saturday from 12:00 p.m to 7:30 p.m ET. Applications to join are due on Monday, February 28, 2022.

Supporting Adults with I/DD and Their Aging Parents &Caregivers: State Medicaid Learning Collaborative

CMS is inviting states to participate in a Medicaid learning collaborative. The learning collaborative is an opportunity for states to develop new solutions and identify promising practices to improve the delivery of supports and services for people with I/DD and their aging caregivers. The collaborative will consist of six monthly virtual learning sessions between November 2021 and April 2022.

This technical assistance tool focuses on the new “information sharing” requirement for Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans beginning in 2021. The tool explains the new requirement as well as how to address the requirement in mandatory D-SNP contracts.
