Health Care Opinion Leaders' Views on the Future of Long-Term Care

Health care experts from diverse fields give their opinions in this survey. The 196 leaders identified the most pressing long-term care (LTC) issues as development of the workforce, improving quality, and securing financing. 76% believe policymakers must urgently deal with the challenge of forming a sufficient supply of home and community-based services. Other themes dealt with include insurance, financial responsibility, a Medicare LTC benefit, and regulatory action.

State Chart Book on Wages for Personal and Home Care Aides, 1999-2006

Thanks to the steadily increasing demand for home care, the second fastest-growing occupation in the country is that of personal and home care aides (PHCAs). Yet PHCA wages - which were low to begin with - are failing to keep up with inflation nationwide. A new publication looks at the decline in inflation-adjusted wages. Based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it charts the wages received by personal and home care aides in all 50 states and the nation over a seven-year period.

Colorado Transportation Survey: Aging and Mobility - 2007

A survey of AARP members in CO provides insights into how and why seniors use public transport or drive, and how these habits affect their well-being. The survey showed a heavy reliance on cars for transportation and independence, even when public transport is available. People with multiple health and disability problems were most likely to be isolated and have few transportation alternatives. Data reports are available for the entire state and each of the four urban areas surveyed.

Federal Disability Programs: Coordination Could Facilitate Better Data Collection to Assess the Status of People with Disabilities

While some health and economic data on people with disabilities are currently available, these data have limited use in providing a comprehensive assessment of how these individuals are faring. Additionally, the lack of more useful data limits the federal government’s ability to determine how well federal programs are serving individuals with disabilities. Read about ways better coordination could help facilitate the collection of such data to inform policy decisions.
