Aging/Older Adults

This document highlights North Dakota’s plan to pay family caregivers for services. North Dakota, as part of its efforts to increase alternatives to nursing homes, uses state funds to provide monthly payments to spouses and other family members to care for low-income people with disabilities, including older people living at home. The report provides background, implementation, and impact information for the program.

This document announces a unique opportunity for New Hampshire communities to improve the quality of life for all of its citizens. This opportunity will allow communities to explore ways to use the social capital within its borders to better provide support and services to all its residents including those who are aging or others with disabilities. The document describes the grant and gives specific application details.

This guide is a workbook for consumers that are transitioning or wish to transition out of a nursing home. The guide provides information on programs, housing, home modifications, etc. and provides space for the consumer to fill in the steps they need to take in each category. Created for consumers in Alabama, this guide will be useful for consumers in other states as well, although contact information and specifics will not apply.

The State of Colorado has established Single Entry Point (SEP) agencies that provide an access point for several publicly funded long-term supports for people with disabilities, including older people, people with physical disabilities, people living with AIDS, and people with brain injuries. SEP agencies provide education to individuals about available options and provide easier access for individuals and families to the programs. This report describes the SEP system in Colorado.

In June ‘03, Maine Gov. Baldacci signed into law the Dirigo Health Reform Act. A major premise behind the law is that successful health care reform must address cost, quality, & access simultaneously & with equal vigor. Named for Maine's motto: To Lead-the program is designed to guarantee health coverage by ‘09 to those who cannot afford insurance. The ME Governor’s Office of Health Policy & Finance (GOHPF) has partnered with NASHP to develop issue briefs keeping states abreast of the reform.

The California Department of Aging administers a broad range of home-and community-based services throughout California, working primarily with the Area Agencies on Aging who serve seniors, adults with disabilities, and caregivers. The Department also works with other public and private agencies in a variety of partnerships to implement our vision. The Living and Working in the Community 2003 conference, sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), was held March 4-5, 2003. Participants included Medicaid grantees, consumers, advocates, Federal and State representatives, providers, and academics. Users can also determine if they are eligible for DHS services.

The Division of Aging and Adult Services serves as the focal point for all matters concerning older Arkansans; serves as an effective and visible advocate for the aging population; gives elderly citizens a choice of how and where they receive long term care services; plans, coordinates, funds and evaluates programs for senior adults.
