Nutrition Services Program

This report assesses the effectiveness of the Title III-C Nutrition Services Program (NSP) under the Older Americans Act. It describes the health and health care utilization of congregate meal and home-delivered meal participants. The report also examines overall wellness measured using longer-term outcomes related to health and avoidance of institutionalization.

This issue brief from the Administration for Community Living describes the nutritional quality of congregate and home-delivered meals offered through the Nutrition Services Program and examines their compliance with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The brief also discusses how the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2010 was used to assess the nutritional quality of the congregate and home-delivered meals.

The 2017 evaluation of the Older Americans Act (OAA) Nutrition Program for the Elderly provides results and information on the impact of the program on the participants’ food security, socialization, and diet quality. Comparisons are drawn from the previous evaluation of the program conducted in 1995. This evaluation also serves to provide insight into areas needing further review.
