Participation Continues to Grow in CMS’ Accountable Care Organization Initiatives in 2024

On January 29, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced increased participation in CMS’ accountable care organization (ACO) initiatives in 2024. ACOs are groups of doctors, hospitals, and other health care professionals that work together to provide high-quality, coordinated service and health care, improve health outcomes, and manage costs. CMS announced that 19 newly formed ACOs in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (Shared Savings Program) are participating in a new, permanent payment option beginning in 2024 that is enabling these ACOs to receive more than $20 million in advance investment payments (AIPs) to care for people who are medically underserved. Timely Brandeis Study Utilizes NCI-AD Data to Highlight Connections Between Unmet Needs for Medicaid HCBS and Poor Health and Community Living Outcomes

The study examined self-reported data from over 10,200 Medicaid HCBS beneficiaries across 13 states using the NCI-AD survey. Unmet needs for Medicaid HCBS were consistently and significantly associated with poor health outcomes (emergency department visits, hospital stays, and preventative care) and community living outcomes (community participation, relationships with family and friends, satisfaction with how time is spent during the day, and sense of control in life.

Call for Applications: Medicaid Leadership Institute, Class of 2022

The Medicaid Leadership Institute supports Medicaid directors in successfully leading their Medicaid programs to improve key health outcomes and advance health equity. This 10-month leadership development program is recruiting a new cohort of up to six Medicaid directors. Medicaid directors in all states, commonwealths, and territories are eligible to apply. Applications are due July 8, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

This issue brief summarizes the current evidence surrounding the effects of Medicaid expansion on coverage, access, affordability, health outcomes, and economic indicators. The paper draws primarily from evidence examined in 202 studies reviewed in a previous KFF literature review on this subject.
