Family Caregiving Counts: Adding Family Caregiver Questions to American Community Survey
Article Publication Date
Summary
The Community Living Policy Center (CLPC), in collaboration with the Lurie Institute for Disability Policy at Brandeis University and the Family Support Research and Training Center at the University of Illinois Chicago, recently published a brief emphasizing the importance of including family caregiver questions in national surveys.
The National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers, released in 2022, includes a goal related to expanding data, research, and evidence-based practices to support family caregivers. Despite this, few national surveys currently include questions that identify family caregivers and the characteristics of caregiving, which limits our ability to inform policy and practice to support family caregivers.
This brief advocates for the addition of family caregiver questions to the American Community Survey (ACS). The authors highlight the value of adding family caregiver questions to the ACS, identifies potential core questions for consideration, and details the process for making addition and changes to the survey.
