This Community Living Brief addresses the issue of consumer/survivor–operated programs and how they have had a significant impact on the delivery of mental health services in this country. The central values of consumer-operated services (empowerment, choice, and to a growing extent, self-determination) now are recognized within the traditional mental health system. At a systems level, consumers/survivors have a formal and recognized voice in planning, implementation, and research.

This presentation addresses a recent pilot study of the implementation of Rider 37 in Texas, the six pioneers and their support network that facilitated in the transition process from a nursing facility to the community, and the stakeholders in Texas who participated in the interviews.

Transcript of 10/10/2003 audio teleconference addressing Arkansas SAHELLO Web based information project. The SAHELLO project covers two very rural counties in the Southwest Arkansas. The purpose of the SAHELLO project is to develop and implement an integrated model of healthcare and social services delivery system for consumers and to make that a system consumer driven model.

This webcast focused on forms of abuse/violence/sexual assault against women and men with disabilities, barriers that get in the way of reporting abuse, and strategies that women and men with disabilities believe are important for enhancing their safety. Survey information, gathered directly from individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities as well as victims of domestic violence, disability organizations and criminal justice agencies, was shared with participants.

As an individual, you may wonder what you can do to change things. As a grassroots group, you may think that the deck is stacked against you. The Power Point slides provide strategies for grass roots advocacy. Materials are especially useful for advocates and consumers.

Under their Real Choice grant, Arkansas developed a training curriculum for people who wish to be advocates for people with disabilities and for people who are elderly. The purpose of the Arkansas Aging and Disability Leadership Academy was to identify, train and develop volunteer leaders and educators in issues related to aging and disabilities. Academy participants will be empowered to become effective advocate leaders to represent the interest of Arkansans.

The Aging and Disability Resource Center Grant Program, was developed to assist states in their efforts to create a single, coordinated system of information and access for all persons seeking long term support. This toolbox has been developed for ADRC grantees to: 1) List and succinctly explain the AoA-CMS requirements per each topic, and 2) provide materials that will support the design, development and operation of resource centers.

Medicare is our country’s health insurance program for people age 65 or older, certain people with disabilities who are under age 65 and people of any age who have permanent kidney failure. It provides basic protection against the cost of health care, but it doesn’t cover all medical expenses or the cost of most long-term care. This briefing paper focuses primarily on Medicare issues related to individuals receiving Social Security disability benefits.

This Web cast covers a brief background to the development of the Rewarding Work Web site, consumer involvement in the design, description of key features of the Web site, searchable items on the job application, how workers and individual employers use the site, related components of the Rewarding Work campaign, and how individual states are linking Rewarding Work to their systems change efforts.

This presentation provides an overview of Illinois' Supportive Living Program and why has it been such an effective production model. The presentation also includes an explanation of assisted living and long-term care options, information about the financial perspective, and eligibility information.
