2010 Fast Family Support Survey: National Results

This report describes a national survey developed in conjunction with PACER Center's Family Advocacy and Support Training Project (FAST) to increase understanding of the key information needs, unmet service needs, and service quality for youth and young adults with disabilities in transition from school to adulthood. Review results of a 2010 Internet survey of 2,416 parents or relatives of children and youth ages 11 years to 39 years with disabilities from 54 U.S. states and territories.

Still in the Shadows with Their Future Uncertain

In 2010, a national Internet survey aimed to capture the perspectives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) and their family caregivers. The Family and Individual Needs for Disability Supports (FINDS) survey focused on issues including educational, housing, employment and support needs of people with ID/DD and their families. Data analysis was conducted by the Institute's Research and Training Center on Community Living; review the technical report on the survey.

Valuing the Invaluable: 2011 Update - The Growing Contributions and Costs of Family Caregiving

The estimated economic value of family caregivers’ unpaid contributions contribution was approximately $450 billion in 2009. If family caregivers were no longer available, the economic cost to the U.S. health care and long-term services and supports systems would increase astronomically. This report updates national and individual state estimates of the economic value of family care using the most current available data, and provides recommendations for taking care of the caregivers.

Aging in Place, Stuck Without Options

By 2015, more than 15.5 million Americans 65 and older will live in communities where public transportation service is poor or non-existent. That number is expected to continue to grow rapidly as the baby boom generation “ages in place” in suburbs and exurbs with few mobility options for those who do not drive. This report ranks metro areas by the percentage of seniors with poor access to public transportation, now and in the coming years, and presents other data on aging and transportation.

Priced Out in 2010

A study of the severe housing affordability problems of people with disabilities. The study compares the federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments of people with significant and long-term disabilities to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Fair Market Rents for modestly priced rental units. Adult Day Services/Adult Day Health: Financial Viability and Scope of Services Provided Under Medicaid Waivers

Looking to better understand how states pay for adult day services through the Medicaid program? Comparing adult day services to other LTC provider types, adult day tends to be the most cost effective providers within the waiver or State Plan. This report looks at the scope of services provided by adult day and relates the clinical complexity of the care provided with the Medicaid reimbursement. Analyze the growth of programs in relation to the reimbursement and scope of services provided.

Money Follows the Person: Change in Participant Experience During the First Year of Community Living

Mathematica released the sixth report in a series that use the latest data available on MFP grants and state efforts to transition Medicaid enrollees to community living and rebalance LTC systems. The report presents survey results showing change in quality of life, quality of care and community integration reported by 803 MFP participants after one year of community living. The authors explore policy implications for MFP and other transition programs.

National Spending for Long-Term Services and Supports

Long-term services and supports (LTSS) for the elderly and younger populations with disabilities are a significant component of national health care spending. In 2009, spending for these services was $203.2 billion (almost 10 percent of all U.S. personal health care spending), most of it paid by the federal-state Medicaid program. This publication presents data on LTSS spending by major public and private sources.
