CMS Releases RFI on Access to Medicaid and CHIP Services

On Thursday, February 17, 2022 CMS released a request for information (RFI) regarding access to Medicaid and CHIP Services. The RFI is broad and extends beyond prior CMS access inquiries, which largely focused on eligible beneficiaries ability to receive covered Medicaid services. This RFI includes topics such as how beneficiaries enroll in and maintain access to coverage, access to the actual services, and payment rates.

National Senior Health & Fitness Day: 2022 Event Dates and Theme Contest

The National Senior Health & Fitness Day has two dates for 2022: Wednesday, May 25, 2022 and Wednesday, October 26, 2022. On these days, over 1,000 local groups will host health and wellness events for 100,000+ older adults across the country. Local organizations interested in hosting an event must register to legally use the National Senior Health & Fitness Day name and logo. Even registration opens next week and has a fee of $34.95 per location. National Senior Health & Fitness day is also hosting a theme contest to select a slogan for the upcoming events. Adults ages 50+ are welcome to submit theme ideas that are focused on the importance of physical activity for older adults.

FEMA Seeking New Members for National Advisory Council

FEMA is seeking qualified individuals with expertise on the needs of people with disabilities and older adults for emergency preparedness, response, and recovery to serve on the agency’s National Advisory Council. Selected council members will guide future recommendations on topics including equity, climate, readiness and workforce. Applications are due on Thursday, March 31, 2022.

New Guidance for Health Care Providers on Civil Rights Protections for People with Disabilities

Today, February 4, 2022, The Department of Health & Human Services has issued new guidance to health care providers on civil rights protections for people with disabilities during COVID-19. The guidance, issued by HHS’ Office for Civil Rights, makes it clear that during the public health emergency it is vital that individuals with disabilities are not prevented from receiving needed health care benefits and services, as this violates federal civil rights laws.

Call for Nutrition Program Photos & Content

ACL is collecting material from local nutrition programs, including photographs, quotes, newspaper clippings, and other materials that highlight Senior Nutrition Programs. In the request, ACL asks for high-quality JPG/PNGs of all types of nutrition activities, from grab-and-go events to nutrition education classes. A release form must be signed by every person shown. Please include the program name, location, a brief description of what is being shared, and the year it was published/produced. Submissions must be received by email by March 18, 2022.

ACL Issues Call for Senior Nutrition Award Nominations

As part of the Senior Nutrition Program 50th Anniversary celebration, ACL is soliciting nominations for nutrition “Champion awards.” These awards will recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Senior Nutrition Program at the state, area, and local levels. The deadline to submit nominations is March 2, 2022.

Biden-Harris Administration Will Cover Free Over-the-Counter COVID-19 Tests Through Medicare

The Administration's new COVID-19 testing initative will now allow people in either Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage to get up to eight over-the-counter COVID-19 tests per month at no cost starting this spring. Tests will be available through eligible pharmacies and other participating entities. This is the first time that Medicare has covered an over-the-counter test at no cost to beneficiaries. Through the new initiative, payment from Medicare will be provided directly to participating pharmacies to allow Medicare beneficiaries to pick up tests at no cost.

Request for Information (RFI) on Strengthening Community Health Through Technology

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has launched the Community Connected Health Initiative, with the intention of integrating innovation, technology, and human connection to support communities in achieving better health. OSTP released a Request for Information (RFI) on Strengthening Community Health Through Technology. This RFI is open to all stakeholders and will likely remain open until March 31, 2022.

When COVID-19 May Be Considered a Disability

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has added a new section to its COVID-19-related technical assistance to clarify when COVID-19 may be considered a disability and how this can impact employers, employees, and job applicants. The new section provides examples of when COVID-19 or disabilities arising from conditions that were caused or worsened by COVID-19, may meet the definition of disability under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or Section 501 of the Rehabilitation Act. It also addresses nondiscrimination protections provided to employees and job applicants under the ADA and the Rehabilitation Act.

Nursing Home Staffing Information Published on Care Compare Website

Starting on Wednesday, January 26, CMS began posting new information on the Care Compare website to help consumers better understand staffing levels and concerns at nursing home facilities that can influence the quality of care being provided to residents. Information on staff turnover and weekend staff will be posted for each facility.
