Responding to the Unexpected: Best Practices During Disasters for Ombudsman Programs

In our capacity as a sub-grantee to the National Long-Term Care Ombudsman Resource Center (NORC), we were pleased to invite SLTCOs to a webinar on May 13, 2021. Regrettably, the past few years have been scarred by various disasters including wildfires, severe winter storms, and COVID-19 pandemic. This webinar was for SLTCOs, to inform thinking and planning around disaster mitigation and management. Attendees heard from leaders from two states on their recent experiences responding to disasters.

ACL Announces $1.4B in ARP-funded Grants to Kick-off Older Americans Month

ACL issued grants totaling $1.4B to help older adults recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, funded through the American Rescue Plan. These grants will help provide meals and nutrition services, support family caregivers, help older adults connect and engage with others to reduce social isolation, re-open senior centers, and help residents of nursing homes resolve complaints.

Maintaining Physical and Mental Well-Being of Older Adults and Their Caregivers During Public Health Emergencies

The purpose of this study is to examine the physical and mental well-being of community-dwelling older adults and their informal or unpaid caregivers during public health emergencies, such as COVID-19. This project also aims to identify public health interventions and strategies available to support older adults and caregivers during public health emergencies.

New York Attorney General and Consumer Voice Release Reports on the Effect of COVID-19 on Nursing Homes

Attorney General of New York, Letitia James (AG), released a preliminary report on the effect of COVID-19 on nursing homes in New York. The report found that pre-existing short-staffing issues were a defining factor in how a great number of nursing homes in New York fared during the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care also released a report detailing harm and neglect resulting from facilities being locked down and inadequate staffing.

Case Study: How Georgia meets the increased needs of seniors during COVID

When COVID-19 appeared in early 2020, human services agencies across the country had to adapt overnight. The Georgia Department of Human Services’ Division of Aging Services created new partnerships with restaurants, placed emergency funds into use quickly, streamlined decision-making and more to meet the needs of seniors.

Personal Protective Equipment Issues and Professional Direct Care Workers During COVID-19

COVID-19 has led to immeasurable repercussions in healthcare systems across the nation and world. The one issue common to all professional direct care workers was the limited availability of personal protective equipment. This policy brief focuses on DCW and challenges they faced, and continue to face, in adequately protecting themselves and others from the transmission and infection of this deadly virus.

This event highlights best practices from across the country in home and community-based services.
