Universal Design Handbook

This Universal Design publication was developed by Kentucky Housing Corporation. This book reflects \"Tier One\" of KHC's implementation of it's Universal Design policy - this will be followed by the implementation of Tiers Two and Three. KHC refers to Tier One as \"Universal Design Light\", as it does not include requirements for all of the features that would normally be considered complaint with universal design principles.

Recruitment Letter

We need your help! In October 2002, a federal grant named The Real Choice System Change Grant was awarded to the Connecticut Department of Social Services and the A.J Pappanikou Center for Disabilities. Part of this grant is to conduct a survey to learn if Connecticut citizens with disabilities are able to participate in all desired aspects of community life in the town in which they live. The resulting information will identify crucial gaps in the integration of persons with disabilities into community life and identify changes necessary to make communities more supportive and inclusive.

Littleton A Model Community

The Town of Littleton, NH has received a $270,000, three-year grant through the Real Choice Systems Change to develop and maintain an infrastructure for the removal of barriers preventing persons who are aging and others with disabilities from fully participating in community life. This document includes a description of the grant and a power point presentation that outlines details and challenges in the development of this Model Community.

Workers Affected by Chronic Conditions

Workers are affected by chronic conditions in two critical ways — by their own conditions and by the need to care for family members with chronic conditions. Better health technology and disease management programs, as well as flexible work policies, are helping many people affected by chronic conditions function in the workplace. Changes in the workplace need not be expensive, and policies and programs that address the needs of workers are beneficial to employees and employers alike.

As a result of the determination of one ordinary citizen, Karen Shidel, courts have issued a landmark ruling in support of growth management that has statewide ramifications. This paper analyzes and answers the critical question: Does the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) apply to commercial and other private sector Web sites, and if so, what does it require. Much discussion of this question seems to be conducted without careful attention to the case law and other authorities that have already built-up around this question.

Real Choice Systems Change Grant Application from the City of Bridgeport

In October 2002 a Real Choice Systems Change grant was awarded to the Connecticut Department of Social Services, and the A.J. Pappanikou Center was selected to administer the grant. The grant is designed to improve the capacity of Connecticut's communities to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families by supporting the development of model communities that fully demonstrate accessible, appropriate, and quality community living opportunities for persons with disabilities.
