Direct Care Workforce

This teleconference is designed to assist grantees that are preparing new curricula for trainings and other activities or who are engaged in the effective communication of information. Kathleen McInnis-Dittrich is the presenter for this teleconference, and she is an Association Professor in the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work, where she teaches social work with elders, social work practice, and methods in professional education.

Direct care workers and long-term care employers are facing greater challenges than ever before in securing affordable health coverage. This "Better Jobs, Better Care" issue brief presents the case for improving health coverage to direct care workers and offers realistic strategies for making health coverage more available and more affordable to them and their families.

This document describes the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Recruitment and Retention Project implemented by the Iowa Care Givers Association. This program aims to decrease turnover among CNAs who provide direct support in three Northwest Iowa nursing facilities. ICA is a member-driven association that provides education, information, support, and advocacy for CNAs, Home Health Aides, and other specialized direct support professionals.

This brief outlines standard training practices for direct-care workers, identifies training gaps, and provides examples of outstanding programs. This is a tool to help agencies, consumers and workers find and develop appropraite educational resources.

The University of California & San Francisco’s Center for Personal Assistance Services provides research, training, dissemination & technical assistance. The center, which was created with the help of a grant from the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research, toffers number of useful resources, including materials about the direct-care workforce and a well-stocked library of publications on issues relating to personal assistance services.

This report describes a recruitment effort lead by the Metro Region of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation (DMR). DMR and provider agencies, in collaboration with a communications company, conducted a marketing campaign to recruit direct support professionals. The report highlights the implementation and impact of the project.
