Emerging Strategies for Providing Health Coverage to the Frontline Workforce in Long Term Care

Senate Committee on Aging Hearing on Health Care Reform in an Aging America

RewardingWork.org – Home Care Worker Recruitment Website

The goal of Rewarding Work is to give people who need support with daily activities choice and control in finding personal assistants. So far, the site has partnered with five states in the Northeast. The searchable database can be used by both people looking to hire help and job seekers. The attached news release describes a special connection these services made possible - the example, a 14-year-old with severe disabilities, and a nursing student looking for a work as PCA.

Improving Access to Health Coverage for Transitional Youth

NASHP produced this report and webinar to help states provide Medicaid and SCHIP coverage to youth involved with or exiting foster care and juvenile justice systems. The report focuses on simplifying enrollment, enhancing retention through transitions, and integrating services with partners. The webinar slides present the report findings in brief and highlight programs in New Mexico and Washington that focus on the juvenile justice system and youths released from incarceration.

Invisible Care Gap: Caregivers without Health Coverage

This resource presents ten key facts showing the economic and health insecurity of the direct care workforce. It can be used to advocate for improved public policies and increase public awareness of the needs and importance of caregivers. The figures presented also illustrate the linkage between quality of care available to the growing population of older Americans, recruitment and retention of workers, and wage and benefits levels.

2008 Symposium on Strengthening the HCBS Direct Service Workforce

Best practices in HCBS workforce development, Federal and state workforce initiatives, and research findings are highlighted in these slides and handouts. Presentations and workshops touched on wages and benefits, recruitment, credentials, peer support, policy, and more. The agenda, program, and evaluation results are also available. The symposium was hosted by the National Direct Service Workforce Resource Center May 8-9, 2008 in Baltimore, MD with support from HHS and the Dept. of Labor.

Quality Support 2005: An Agenda to Strengthen the Developmental Disabilities Direct Support Professional Workforce in Illinois

A broad coalition of stakeholders created this example of a comprehensive state-level workforce development plan. The document suggests solutions to the following workforce challenges: recruitment and retention; education, training and development; data gathering and monitoring; status and awareness of profession; and mentoring and supervision. An executive summary and 1-page call to action targeted at key stakeholders are included.
